  26.             NORDUnet is a international backbone that interconnects  the
  27.             Nordic  countries  Sweden (SUNET), Norway (UNINETT), Finland
  28.             (FUNET), Denmark (DENET) and Iceland (SURIS).  It also  pro-
  29.             vides internatinal connections to Major European and US net-
  30.             works.  NORDUnet started real operation in Autumn 1988.

  32.             There are (at least) 4500 IP hosts  and  about  1000  DECnet
  33.             hosts  in  the combined national networks that are intercon-
  34.             nected by NORDUnet.
  35.  
  36.             The protocols supported as services across the backbone  are
  37.             IP, DECnet, EARN/NJE and X.25.
  38.  
  39.             NORDUnet   connects   through    service    agreements    to
  40.             Internet/NSFnet,  EARN,  HEPnet and EUnet. Pilot connections
  41.             will be set up to COSINE/IXI X.25 and to EARN OSI.

  43.             NORDUnet is a star with a center at KTH, Stockholm,  Sweden.
  44.             There  are 64-kbit lines to RUNIT, Trondheim, Norway; UNI-C,
  45.             Copenhagen, Denmark and HUT,  Helsinki,  Finland.  There  is
  46.             also  a  64  kbit line to CWI in Amsterdam, Holland and a 56
  47.             kbit line to JvNC, Princeton, USA.

  49.             The (nordic) lines  interconnect  MAC-level  remote  bridges
